Independence with Impact
Report 2022
Foreword by CEO, Blaise Simqu (he/him)
We are proud to present this annual report, showcasing Sage's ongoing influence within academia, publishing, and society at large. More than just a summary of our achievements, it is a reflection of our people turning our values into action.
Impact has always been at the core of our business. Founded by Sara Miller McCune in 1965, Sage was built on the belief that education and research foster a better society, and that idea drives us still.
Sara's unwavering commitment to Sage's independence ensures its long-term impact. Sara transferred control of the company to the Sage-SMM Trust, a significant step toward securing our independence indefinitely, and 2022 was the first full year under control of that trust. Sage's management team has not changed, reflecting our commitment to continuity and stability. In due course, Sara will gift her non-voting shares to various higher education and research organizations, making them Sage's beneficial owners. Such an act of generosity by a founder is exceedingly rare, and we, at Sage, are deeply committed to honoring and advancing Sara's vision for the future.
Throughout 2022, we heightened our focus on diversity and inclusivity, both within our organization and in our published works. Sara's pioneering efforts in research methodologies and the establishment of new fields, such as ethnic studies and gender studies, exemplify her dedication to fostering a more equitable society through research publishing. This report highlights other areas where our publishing impacts society.
While there is still much work to be done, this report outlines our accomplishments and plans in various areas, including our increased commitment to sustainability.
I thank everyone who has contributed to the work detailed in this report: authors, editors, contributors, societies, faculty, librarians, and our global staff who are dedicated to enhancing Sage's impact.
