US Green Group: Trail workday

In the morning of October 21, 2022, a group of Sage employees participated in a community service event in Thousand Oaks, California with two local organizations, The Conejo Open Space Foundation (COSF) and the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA). The aim was to clean up a local trail and the surrounding area near the Sage California offices.

Around 8:15 a.m., we met with Anne and Tania from COSF for brief introductions about the two organizations and the plan for that morning. We then met COSCA Rangers Joe and Ryan at the Conejo Canyons Trailhead, who described the climate, flora, fauna, and history of the region before getting us ready with gloves, buckets, bags, and pickers.

We started at the lot area along the large rocks, mostly picking up broken glass, cigarettes, and wrappers. The rangers and a few others were willing to ease down the somewhat steep hill to collect bottles, cans, and other trash that had either been thrown over the edge or scattered among the bushes by the wind.

After a water break, we continued looking for trash along both sides of Conejo Center Drive. Some people encountered interesting items like a chair, a car wheel rim, and carpeting. All in all, we collected over 100 pounds of trash!

Although a lot of bugs bothered us, we did not see any snakes or (the rare) scorpions, and fortunately, it did not get too hot.

Thanks to everyone for participating, and thanks to COSF and the COSCA rangers for this opportunity to help clean up a local trail and the surrounding area!
